Olympian Aquil Abdullah to Commentate the Lenny Peters Cup
If you were at the water’s edge last October, you know exactly why this is big news. We are ecstatic to announce that Olympic rower and premier rowing analyst Aquil Abdullah is officially returning to High Point to provide expert commentary for the Lenny Peters Cup.
After a stellar debut behind the mic here last fall, Aquil is back by popular demand to bring his signature blend of technical brilliance and Olympic-level insight to our local shores.
A Global Icon, A Local Favorite
Aquil Abdullah’s resume is the stuff of rowing legend. While he isn't a High Point native, he has quickly become an essential part of our racing community’s story.
-
A Trailblazer: As the first African American male to row for Team USA in the Olympics (Athens 2004), Aquil brings a level of prestige that few in the world can match.
-
The Gold Standard of Commentary: Since retiring from competitive rowing, he has mastered the art of the broadcast, famously calling the action for the Henley Royal Regatta and major national championships.
-
Back by Popular Demand: After his incredible work at the microphone last October, it was clear that the Lenny Peters Cup wouldn't be the same without his play-by-play.
What to Expect on Race Day
Rowing is often called a "game of inches," and no one explains those inches better than Aquil. He doesn't just tell you who is winning; he tells you why.
And with Team USA racing the World Dream Team of Olympians in High Point this April that is huge.
"From explaining the sheer power required to maintain velocity to identifying the subtle shifts in a crew's rhythm, Aquil makes the complex science of rowing accessible to every spectator on the bank"Aquil brought such an incredible energy to the races last October. We knew immediately we had to bring that world-class perspective back for the Lenny Peters Cup." — Race Director Gene Kininmonth
