World Dream Team Adds Australian Olympic Rower Ria Thompson for Lenny Peters Cup Race

High Point, North Carolina - Australia’s two-time Olympic rower, Ria Thompson, has been selected to the world dream team that will race Team USA for the inaugural Lenny Peters Cup on April 12.

Thompson, the U23 world champion single sculler in 2019, who then won Olympic bronze in Tokyo in the women’s quad sculls, will race alongside three female and four male Paris Olympians from various countries taking on the Americans in a Ryder Cup style series of match races.

Race director Gene Kininmonth said he is delighted to have Thompson join the world team. “We have an extremely high criteria for selection based on Olympic results, world rankings, and recent racing form,” said Kininmonth. “Ria is a U23 world champion and an Olympic medalist making her an excellent choice for this team.”

Thompson is no stranger to international success on American waters. She won her U23 world title in Sarasota, Florida.

Thompson said she is excited to join an international team of rowers she typically races against. “What a fun and unique opportunity to jump into a boat with people who are normally the competition and see how fast we can go!”

Raised in Melbourne, Thompson holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Melbourne and is currently studying toward a Doctor of Medicine and a PhD at the University of Queensland.
